Malaysia Becomes Southeast Asia's Most Visited Country
Malaysia welcomed more than 42 million international visitors in 2025, overtaking regional rivals and setting the stage for an even bigger 2026.
Malaysia closed out 2025 as Southeast Asia's most visited country, recording more than 42 million international arrivals for the year, an increase of over 11 per cent from 2024 and a figure that exceeds pre-pandemic visitor numbers by more than 20 per cent.
Tourism authorities say the milestone reflects years of investment in infrastructure, cultural programming and international marketing, alongside simplified visa arrangements that have made it easier for travellers from key markets to visit. Singapore, Indonesia, China and a growing number of European visitors have been among the biggest contributors to the surge. The government has set its sights even higher for 2026, targeting a record 2.1 million visitors from India alone as part of the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign, which promotes the country's food, culture and family-friendly attractions to travellers across Asia.
Officials say the growth has translated into real benefits for small businesses, from hawker stalls to homestays, particularly in popular destinations such as Penang, Langkawi, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, where new secondary flight routes have made it easier for international visitors to reach beyond Kuala Lumpur.
